Local government election will take place in Ebonyi State on August 15, 2020, the State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), has said.

The election was earlier put on hold following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country on February 27. The situation led to the appointment of caretaker chairmen for the 13 local government areas in the state.

However, following the eased lockdown, Governor David Umahi had last week asked the electoral commission in the state to recommence the process of conducting council election in the 13 councils and 171 wards in the state.

Speaking during a meeting with political parties at the Commission’s office along Onwe Road, Abakaliki, on Wednesday, the EBSIEC Chairman, Jossy Eze said the commission was ready to hold the election on the 15th of next month.

The Commission’s chairman pledged the readiness of his team to conduct a credible election by ensuring that all the gladiators irrespective of their political parties operated within a level playing ground.

A source in the commission revealed that about 13 parties will take part in the election.
